Date: Wed, 26 Aug 1998 01:59:38 +0200 ()

Dear Colleagues:

The I-band brightness of the MACHO event, 98-BLG-42, which is being
monitored by the PLANET group, has declined by 1.7mag during the last
six hours. This decline followed a steady rise in brightness by 1.3mag
in the three days following the MACHO alert on August 22.
This behaviour appears to be the result of a caustic crossing by a
resolved source at some time between JD 2451050.5 and 2451051.2.
You are encouraged to make further observations to monitor
subsequent developments in the light curve.
